HIGHLAND AND SHETLAND PONIES
At Erray we take great pride in our closed herd of ponies. We first started breeding ponies when we took over the Shetland pony stud on Inch Kenneth in 1975. We already had a BHS approved trekking and trailriding centre. Taking visitors riding on the hill proved a good way of keeping a close eye on our pedigree Galloway cattle and sheep.
Our best Shetland mare was Lakeland Primrose and its her progeny plus those of Westpark Goya who run on Erray today, producing black or chestnut standard size foals. Todays youngstock and foals are off Dryfesdale Dynamo who also has Lakeland breeding.
In 1976 we bought a Highland filly Jasmine of Whitefield who was off a lovely mare Mayfly of Derculich, not only did she pass on her lovely calm temperament to her progeny but also her lovely action and excellent maternal instincts. All our mares and foals now carry her bloodline. We use our highland ponies not only for breeding and riding but carrying feed to the hill and in the past deer off it. Our stallion is Moss-side Dorlach who also has Mayfly in his bloodlines and was Male Champion and Reserve Overall at the 2005 Royal Highland Show.
All our ponies have ample room to run on the hill, feeding on the herb rich grassland and heather, in the winter supplemented by hay and nuts. In winter the foals stay close to the farm for handling and get fed on nuts and hay.
All our ponies have excellent bloodlines and will make not only good working ponies but also loving members of the family - to suit the 3 year old, your first pony and everyone in between to the over 70 year old who wants a quiet ride.
Buying and bringing on youngstock is not only fun but very rewarding. Provided you look after them properly they can be a better prospect financially than the Stock exchange, since they can double in price in their first few years. However with most people once they have bought an Erray pony it will have a home for life. See 'Erray ponies moved on'.
